Wirtschaftsenglisch Overview
Wirtschaftsenglisch modules are primarily for students on EES, BWL and IBWL degree programmes.
- Erasmus students are warmly welcomed too.
The modules engage with economic and business topics as a vehicle for developing language skills.
For the following, extra information can be found under “Important Information—click for more details”.
Wirtschaftsenglisch Modules (ab WS24-25)
The modules for Wirtschaftsenglisch have changed. From WS24/25:
- students attend modules approprate to their language ability (previously, choice of module was restricted by degree programme level, whether Ba or Ma).
- students are advised to take modules in an ascending order of language level.
- the C1 modules can be taken in any order
- it is recommended to only take one module per semester.
- each module consists of two double lessons per week.
Placement Test
Students taking their first Wirtschaftsenglisch module are requested to take a placement test and follow the results (see below).
- Doing so ensures students can attend homogenous level teaching groups.
Students who have already completed a Wirtschaftsenglisch module are advised to progress to the next level module.
- There is no need to take the placement test.
UnivIS & FlexNow Pool Registration / Allocation
Students use UnivIS to identify when Wirtschaftsenglisch modules are taught.
Some Wirtschaftsenglisch modules use the FlexNow pool registration / allocation method - see below

- FlexNow is also used for exam registration.
UnivIS
Each Wirtschaftsenglisch module consists of two 90 minute lessons per week.
- The lessons are set up in fixed pairings labelled A, B, C, etc.
- Check UnivIS to find the day/times involved for each lesson pairing—use the links on this webpage
- In FlexNow, only select lesson pairs for which you can actually attend both lessons involved
FlexNow Pool Registration
Registration to all but one of the Wirtschaftsenglisch modules uses the FlexNow pool method.
- The exception is Wirtschaftsenglisch 5—for this module there is only one course, so simply make a direct registration in FlexNow.
For pool registrations:
- You make registration selections in FlexNow for the module you want to attend--observe the minimum number of selections needed (see below).
- On the Monday of the first week of the semester, FlexNow allocates you to one of your selections.
1. FlexNow Pool Selections
- from : 15.09.2025 (10:00)
- to : 12.10.2025 (23:59)
Per module you are registering for, you need to make a minimum number of selections in FlexNow, as follows:
- Wirtschaftsenglisch 1—two selections (from A, B, C)
- Note: In a spirit of fairness, Group B will prioritise the needs of true B1 level learners.
- Wirtschaftsenglisch 2—two selections (from A, B, C, D)
- Wirtschaftsenglisch 3—two selections (from A, B, C, D)
Remember:
- use UnivIS to help identify which selections to make.
- you can only attend one module per semester.
2. FlexNow Allocation
On 13.10.2025, FlexNow will allocate you to one of your selections sending you an email with the details.
- FlexNow randomly allocates you to one of your selections—this allocation cannot be influenced
- Occasionally, FlexNow will allocate you to the waiting list—simply follow the instructions you are sent.
Module Registration—Example: Sasha registers for Wirtschaftsenglisch 1
Sasha, a BWL student at the University of Bamberg, wants to register for their first Wirtschaftsenglisch course. So, first of all, Sasha takes the placement test. The result advises Sasha to take the B1 level course: Wirtschaftsenglisch 1.
Sasha checks UnivIS and sees that in WS25-26 there are three teaching groups in Wirtschaftsenglisch 1. They are scheduled in UnivIS as follows :
- group A Mon 12:00-14:00 (Erba) & Wed 10:00-12:00 (Erba)
- group B Tue 12:00-14:00 (Erba) & Thu 08:00-10:00 (Erba)
- group C Tue 14:00-16:00 (K?7) & Thu 10:00-12:00 (Feki)
Sasha reads the Wirtschaftsenglisch homepage and finds out that Wirtschaftsenglisch 1 uses the FlexNow pool allocation method.
So, Sasha has to make two selections in FlexNow from groups A, B, C.
The combinations are:
- group A + group B
- group A + group C
- group B + group C
Sasha already has a course at the Feki—German VAT Law (Umsatzsteuerrecht)—scheduled in for Thursday at 10:00. So, for Wirtschaftsenglisch 1, Sasha will select group A + group B in FlexNow.
Sasha opens FlexNow, goes into the Lehrveranstaltung tab, clicks around and finds at the bottom of a long list the Wirtschaftsenglisch courses.
- Sasha puts Wirtschaftsenglisch 1, group A into the basket
- and then puts Wirtschaftsenglisch 1, group B in too
- and saves the basket.
On Wirtschaftsenglisch allocation day—Monday 13 October 2025—an email arrives: FlexNow has allocated Sasha to Wirtschaftsenglisch 1, group B.
- Sasha will attend the lessons for group B: Tue 12:00-14:00 & Thu 08:00-10:00
- The first lesson for group B will be on Tuesday 21 October 2025.
For the Thursday lesson, Sasha is concerned about having to get from the Erba to the Feki on time for the German VAT lesson. The Language Centre secretaries' office are very helpful. They explain that:
- Lessons are scheduled in UnivIS from the hour to the hour. For example: 08:00-10:00. This is the room reservation time.
- However, the lessons are only 90 minutes long. Teaching starts at a quarter past the hour and runs to a quarter to the hour. So: 08:15 – 09:45.
Sasha is delighted and decides to share on @sz_unibamberg about registering for Wirtschaftsenglisch 1.
