Regulations and documents for doctorates and habilitations

If you have any questions, please also contact your supervisor.

Please note that the following documents and regulations are only legally binding in the German version and are therefore only available in German. If you need help filling out the documents, please contact the doctoral office or your supervisor.

For applicants with a foreign university degree, these documents are also required:

  • Application for recognition of the foreign university degree
  • Admission letter or equivalence certificate from the Welcome Center
  • If the university degree certificate is not issued in German, English or French, a corresponding translation prepared by a sworn translator.

The submission of the dissertation includes:

  • three copies of the printed dissertation and an electronic version
  • a statement that the doctoral candidate has written the dissertation independently, i.e., without the help of a doctoral advisor, has not used any aids other than those listed in the list of sources and bibliography, and has identified all passages taken verbatim or paraphrased from sources and literature as such (must be bound at the back)
  • in the case of a cumulative dissertation comprising works by several authors, a declaration in accordance with § 9 (4) sentence 6
  • an assurance that the dissertation or substantial parts thereof have not already been submitted to another examination authority for the purpose of obtaining a doctoral degree (must be bound at the back)
  • a statement as to whether and in what form the work or parts thereof have already been published

It is not mandatory to provide a DOI and the date of the defense.

In addition, we recommend the doctoral student advisory service at the Trimberg Research Academy.
The doctoral student advisory service supports all prospective doctoral students and doctoral candidates at the University of Bamberg by providing advice, information, networking opportunities, and events.

The Welcome Center is the first point of contact for graduates of foreign universities. For applicants who have obtained their university entrance qualification in Germany but completed their master's degree abroad, an equivalence assessment of their university certificates is carried out here. Applicants who have obtained both their university entrance qualification and further university degrees outside Germany must apply for initial admission at the Welcome Center.

Dissertations and habilitations are available for inspection in paper form in the Dean's Office. For dissertations, there is also the possibility of electronic inspection, with the prior consent of the doctoral candidates. Whether the additional option of electronic inspection is available will be communicated to those entitled to inspect the documents with the display notification.
