Theses
Please note that these instructions apply exclusively to theses at the Professorship for Sociology, especially work and employment!
Supervision
You are welcome to write your Bachelor's or Master's thesis with me. I am happy to supervise interested and motivated students in their projects. Prior attendance of one of my courses is highly recommended. In general, you should be interested in topics of labor and occupational research or related fields and have basic knowledge of empirical social research. In any case, it is necessary that you conduct an own empirical analysis on a specific sociological issue. You can take a qualitative-empirical approach or carry out quantitative primary or secondary data analysis.
Please get in touch with me in good time (approx. 2-3 months before the start of the processing period). We will discuss possible topics and research questions in an initial meeting. Please contact me with your own topic suggestions and research questions. Therefore, you should send me a one-page exposé in advance by e-mail in which you briefly outline your topic and research questions:
- Motivation/problem outline: Why do you think your topic is interesting and relevant?
- Research question: What is the research question?
- Method: Which empirical and methodological approach would you like to take?
The focus of the supervision is to accompany the process of writing the thesis and to structure it with clear procedural rules. We will meet at regular intervals to discuss your progress and any questions or problems that may arise.
For sociology students, a disputation takes place at the end of the processing time, in which you present and discuss your work in a 30-minute presentation.
Working time and scope
The processing time for a Bachelor's thesis (35-40 pages) is 3 months.
The processing time for a Master’s thesis (60-80 pages) is 6 months.
